Snorkelling is a fantastic way to see the Reef! Coral gardens rise up to within metres (sometimes centimeters) of the surface. You can see the Reef from the boat, the sunlight illuminating the colourful corals, fish and marine life below. When snorkelling on the Reef you may see Anemone Fish (Nemo), giant Maori Wrasse, Butterfly Fish, Angelfish and much, much more. While snorkelling around Low Isles offers chance encounters with Green Sea Turtles, Reef Sharks, Wrasse, Parrotfish and more. ABC Reef Safaris’ is in the final stages of building a brand-new luxury catamaran Voyager, which will launch in October 2025. At that time, Voyager will become ABC’s reef snorkel boat – until then Independence continues excellent, award-winning service as usual. Voyager will take 24 guests on exclusive Great Barrier Reef snorkelling tours, also providing the option for first time diving. The small guide to group ratio remains the same, with 1:6. Voyager will have an air-conditioned lounge with business-class style seating and queen-sized daybeds on the sundeck, with additional sunny seating on the bow. Prefer shade? The back deck will provide a breezy retreat. Functionality is seamless with barefoot-friendly decking and purpose-built ocean access with stairs and a platform, making water access effortless for all. Our team of marine biologists and dive professionals are all certified Instructors and Dive Masters, giving you the chance to try scuba diving for the very first time. No experience is required, just a sense of adventure. On the way to the reef our crew will guide you through safety, equipment and communication briefings, so you feel confident before entering the Coral Sea. Once underwater, your instructor is with you the entire time, leading you through the coral gardens and bommies, while providing close encounters with reef life. Introductory dives last around 20 minutes and go no deeper than 10 metres, making them ideal for beginners. This optional experience is offered at an additional cost, and with plenty of time in the day, you’ll still enjoy relaxed snorkelling. If you love it, we can also arrange dive courses.

Snorkelling Notes

  • We always recommend booking early as there are certain periods of the year when we are booked 2-3 weeks in advance.
  • The Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Environmental Management Charge is applicable for all patrons. From 15 June 2025, all direct bookings made via the ABC website will have the Environmental Management Charge (EMC) of $8 per person added at the time of booking. For bookings made via third parties, the EMC is not included in the advertised price and will be collected by the crew on the day of travel.
  • Our snorkel days are fully guided at an approximate ratio of 6 snorkelers to 1 guide.
  • Snorkeling equipment, instruction, lycra suits, or 5mm wetsuits in winter are included.
  • For children aged 7-12, we provide full 5mm wetsuits.
  • Prescription masks are available. Please check with us in advance to ensure availability.
  • Snorkelling Requirements. To snorkel the Outer Great Barrier Reef, some swimming ability and fitness is required. Older age and certain medical conditions, particularly heart disease, increase the risks of snorkelling. If you have any doubts, please contact us. In some cases, opting to hire an additional guide may be a sensible option to assist you, which is also fairer for the other guests on board.
  • Introductory Scuba Diving Requirements. For your safety, all introductory scuba divers are required to complete a medical questionnaire before joining the dive. This is a standard part of the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program. The form asks about common medical conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, heart disease, diabetes, ear or sinus problems and recent surgeries. If you answer “Yes” to any condition on the questionnaire, you may need to obtain clearance from a doctor before diving. Please note that certain conditions, including pregnancy or recent chest/ear surgery, may prevent participation. Participants must be at least 12 years old (with parental consent for minors). You should be able to swim comfortably and feel confident in the water. Our professional instructors will review your form with you and ensure you meet the requirements before entering the water. Safety is always our highest priority.
  • Car Hire is recommended for our region, a hire car is a cost-effective alternative, especially if you are traveling from Palm Cove or Cairns.
  • Free parking is available at our vessel location, Maranos Fuel Wharf, Port Douglas. You can find maps on our website or use the “Get Directions” button on the top left of your booking confirmation (Google Maps).

What makes this Port Douglas’ best snorkelling tour?

Small groups! ABC provide a guide to guest ratio of 1:6, with Marine Biologist guides with you in and out of the water. Outer Reef sites chosen daily for coral quality and conditions.

Independence takes a maximum of 12 guests. Voyager will take a maximum of 24 guests.

What time does the ABC Reef Safaris' snorkelling tour depart and return?

Our Independence snorkelling tour departs Marano’s Wharf at 8am and returns around 3pm. Guests meet at Independence at 7.45am for check-in. The full day trip includes travel, snorkelling, meals and snacks, cold water, tea and coffee, with plenty of time to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef.

When Voyager commences operations in October 2025, this schedule changes slightly. The check-in and departure times remain the same, but the return time is later at 4.30pm. This enables us to visit the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs, which are further offshore.

Is snorkelling equipment included in the tour price?

Yes. We provide high-quality snorkelling equipment including fins, masks and snorkels. Our range is suitable for those aged 7 years old and above. Prescription masks are available at no extra cost, but please advise requirements in advance and at time of booking. All equipment is maintained to professional standards, ensuring comfort and safety, so you can focus on exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

Are wetsuits or lycra suits supplied on this Port Douglas snorkelling tour?

Yes. During summer (November to April), full-length lycra suits are provided for stinger and sun protection. In winter, we supply 5mm wetsuits to keep you warm. Children aged 7–12 receive full wetsuits. If you feel the cold, we recommend wearing a thin under-layer.

What is the minimum age for children to snorkel?

The minimum age is 7 years old, as this is when our high-quality equipment fits properly. Children aged 7 to 12 years of age are provided with full wetsuits for extra warmth. Parents should ensure children are comfortable in open water, as swimming ability is essential for ABC Reef Safaris tours.

Can I try scuba diving if I’ve never done it before?

Yes. Introductory scuba diving is available for first timers on ABC Reef Safaris. Please note the minimum age to participate is 12 years old. No prior experience needed. Certified instructors provide full safety and equipment briefings, then guide you underwater for about 20 minutes to a maximum depth of 10 metres. Health restrictions apply, please see the notes above and check before booking if you have any queries or concerns.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. Our gourmet light bites and grazing-style lunch is prepared fresh daily with a focus on local produce. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements, but do require advance notice. Please provide details at the time of booking, so our crew can prepare meals to suit your needs while maintaining premium quality onboard.

How many reef sites will we visit in a day on the ABC Reef Safaris snorkelling tour?

Each day we visit two carefully selected outer reef sites. Exact locations vary depending on weather and conditions, our Captain will choose the best sites to provide a premium reef experience. Small groups and a 1:6 guide to guest ratio ensure safety, personal attention and memorable encounters with vibrant marine life.

What should I bring on the day of my Port Douglas snorkelling tour?

Bring a towel, water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, camera and something dry to wear for the return trip. Sea sickness medication is recommended if you’re prone to motion sickness. Swimwear should be worn under your wetsuit or lycra suit. A sense of adventure is always welcome too.

Is parking available near the boat?

Yes. Free parking is available just a few metres from where the ABC Reef Safaris’ boats are moored at Marano’s Wharf, Port Street, Port Douglas. Once booked, your confirmation includes a “Get Directions” button for Google Maps to guide you directly to our vessel with accurate travel time estimates.

What is your cancellation policy for snorkelling tours?
